With a total of 508,000 ethnographic and archaeological items, 140,000 sound recordings in its Ethno-Musicology Department, 285,000 ethnographic photographs, 20,000 ethnographic films, and 50,000 meters of unedited film material, as well as 200,000 pages of written documentation, the Ethnologisches Museum in Berlin is one of the largest of its kind in the world and, probably, the largest in Europe. Many of its collections are the most comprehensive and valuable in existence: those from the Northwest Coast of North America (among them the Jacobsen Collection); the Ancient Peruvian and Ancient Mexican Collections, which are the largest outside their regions of origin; or the African Collection, which, along with that of the British Museum in London, is the most important worldwide.
