The Museum of Byzantine Art owns a superb collection of Late Antique and Byzantine artworks and objects of utility. It is the only one of its kind in Germany. The objects come from the western Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire, from the third to the fifteenth centuries. The collection concentrates on four main areas: Late Antique and Christian sarcophagi; figural and decorative sculpture from Constantinople; precious ivory carvings and mosaic icons; and finally objects of everyday life from Early Byzantine Egypt.
